After a moving and stimulating pilot version in the summer of 2020, the Dance Repertory as Shared Knowledge mini-course returns with a new edition for the 20-21 season entitled, "The Individual and The Community." Our treasured trio—Carolyn Adams, Mary Anne Santos Newhall, and Julie Adams Strandberg—will again lead participants through the viewing and investigation of iconic dances. Studying five 20th century works, the mini-course will examine how choreographers integrate text, music and the visual arts into their work; how dance can help to build, demonstrate, and sustain community in myriad ways including the relationship between vernacular dance and concert dance; and how choreography has been crafted to represent the individual in the city. The underlying theme across the three sessions will be: finding common ground in a time of great change.
